This is a video of Clay Shirky at the 2005 TED conference, talking about how closed groups and companies will give way to looser networks where small contributors have big roles and fluid cooperation replaces rigid planning. My conception of “open mat jiu-jitsu” follows similar lines. What do you think, can we take advantage of an open, collaborative model to make jiu-jitsu even better?

It is systems theory my friend, a closed system that accepts no feedback from the outside always travels towards entropy or death if that system is biological. So a company that is closed (GM might come to mind) who doesn’t listen to the customer or the outside feedback, ends up not succeeding. So when you allow comments on your blog or system it allows outside input and points of view you may not have even thought of which in turn, makes your site better…in theory.
I think it’s a good idea. I think I remember in psychology that the ideal group size was three people. I like talking with my partner during training about different aspects, and I can see the benefit of working as a small group in class. The third set of eyes can point out things from their vantage point that the two training might miss. The third person can aid in collaboration, as well as giving one the chance to take an analytical look at the techniques/strategies being applied. Plus I always hear such good things about threesomes.
